Course description: Written communication in English is always preceded by thinking and oral communication, and in this course students will have ample opportunity to present in oral form information from our textbook. This oral practice develops the student writer’s sensitivity to audience and the implications of different options in delivering ideas, both orally and in written form.
By the end of the Fall semester, students should be able to identify and write good paragraphs in English. They should be able to write grammatical and effective English sentences with ease. They should know their way around the university library as well. By the end of the Spring semester, they should easily be able to identify a topic on which to write a short academic paper in English. The knowledge and skills you develop in this course will be further developed and refined in future composition classes..

課程要求
Class Requirements:
1. You need to attend class. Tardiness is not acceptable in this class because it
interferes with the learning process of all students in the class. Two instances of tardiness equal one hour of unexcused absence in class. In line with the university policy, one hour of unexcused absence equals five hours of absence. If you have two hours of unexcused absence, you will not receive a grade for this course. Absences are excused only if the student contacts the instructor prior to the absence and makes up the missed work prior to the next regularly scheduled class. It is the student’s responsibility to find out what material was covered in class and what homework was assigned.
2. Active class participation is also required. There are many dimensions
to participation, both verbal and non-verbal. Active participation at the beginning of each class means you are prepared for class, have reviewed your notes for the previous classes and are fully prepared to begin class when the bell rings. During lectures, active participation means you are taking notes on what is being said, preparing questions to follow up on and sharing your questions at an acceptable time during class. Participation also includes asking clarifying questions in class as well as commenting on the contributions of your classmates in class. It also means refraining from holding private discussions in class during a lecture or class discussion. If you have a question about something in class, ask your teacher, not a classmate! Many students fear asking the ‘wrong question’ or giving the ‘wrong answer’. In classes with active participation this is not a problem. Through such questions or answers, all the students (and even the teacher) can learn more. Active participation includes responding to answers, ideas and questions raised by your classmates in class. If you did not follow or understand what someone said (including the teacher), you need to ask clarifying questions. Text messaging, talking on your cell phone, and surfing the Internet, although dynamic things to do, are NOT part of active class participation. In addition, during the semester, each student will be asked on occasion to assist the class or teacher in some way.
3. You will need to complete homework assignments and several short writing
assignments. This class has a zero tolerance for copying (plagiarizing) any writing from any other source, be it printed or on the Internet. Any student plagiarizing material will not pass the course. Due to the flow of this class, all assignments must be handed in on time. Five points per day (including Saturday and Sunday) will be deducted from all late assignments or compositions. Place all late assignments in my mailbox in the FLLD office. Be sure to put your assignment into an envelope and address the envelope to the teacher. Also include two ways the teacher can contact you about your assignment.
4. In this class you will do two types of homework – exercises and writing
assignments. The latter should be typed on a computer with 3 copies printed out. In addition, email a copy of the writing assignment to class.3.2007@gmail.com The title for the file should follow this format: your English name.assignment number.doc (Mary.writing_assignment_1.doc)
5. For many of the assignments and exercises in class you will need to have a writing buddy. Please negotiate times you can meet to work together outside of class.
